In this strip the words are almost identical to the actual story. Jonathan and Kurt are remarking about the abilities of the lap swimmers they are guarding. However, even the best swimmers can experience things that aren’t meant to happen. Yes, lifeguarding is a job that has its hilarious moments and also one that is very serious.
Very rarely will a catastrophe occur at a pool, which might leave some people wondering if lifeguards are really needed. The answer is that because lifeguards are present, it is less likely that an emergency will happen. I do admit that because we frequently review scenarios at in-services and don’t see much action, we lifeguards tend to develop a dark sense of humor.

I find it a wonder that the city lets me teach swim lessons when I come up with cartoons like this. For the record, I have been told that I’m a good swim instructor, but after seeing this, someone may question my authority to teach kids.
Parent: “Where did you learn that?!” Kid: “My swim instructor.” It seems that the more I do this job, the more Kurt takes over my personality. Oh well, as long as I don’t turn into a Mr. Hyde character I’ll be fine. It appears that Shakespeare is a heavy influence on my writing as well.
