This is what happens when you stay up late reading "that Scottish play."

Many of you will recognize this reference from “that Scottish play” and yes, it’s bad luck to mention it in a theatre. Since I’m not certain what happens if you mention it in a cartoon blog, I won’t, as it’s sure to be sinister!

Nearly two years ago, when I first decided to create “Suits and Guarders,” I sat down and listed out the types of gags and humor accessible to a group of teens and young adults working at a pool. I wanted to be certain that there would be enough material to make a cartoon series. Turns out, I didn’t need to worry. Teens and young adult lifeguards are often studying for classes in between their time on the stand. This is the first of a number of Shakespeare references in “Suits and Guarders.” Trust me; with a little British literature, a little art, a twisted sense of humor and these crazy characters, I’ll be writing cartoons for a long, long time.

"I don't want anyone trying to pull a MacGyver."

On Go Comics, the lifeguards are stuck in personal safety training. This week they will be back poolside. Follow the link and click the green “+” to subscribe free:

I consider this strip to be one of my better ones for the fact that it actually happened. Well, except for the Arnold bit. The police officer giving the personal safety training my first year as a lifeguard mentioned “pulling a MacGyver.” I must have been one of the few people under the age of 25 who got the joke, and obviously Arnold did not get it. The officer was very entertaining and kept everyone engaged the entire time by asking questions and having the audience give the answers. Yeah, this guy has probably told people, “When I was a kid….. I watched MacGyver!”

Don’t forget, to caption the picture on the blog page below. There are already two very different, but extremely entertaining captions. (Thanks Jonathan and Neil!) Scroll down to add your caption in the comments section.

See you in the water!

The aquatic family photo is now complete.
I find it very odd how these lifeguards can concentrate while watching the pool, but can’t take a decent photo. Tell me what you think each person is thinking in this picture.
From left to right the characters are:  Jonathan, Julie, Bernard, Thomas, Arnold, Liz, Kurt, and Ellen their supervisor.

Yes, I really want to know what you think. Click the comment button below.

Meanwhile on Go Comics, the lifeguards will be taking Personal Safety Training all week. In reality, the training only takes 90 minutes but since they are cartoon characters they will be there all week long. Plus, they need it!

Ian Johnson was born with a crazy cartoon character perspective on the real world. “Suits and Guarders” is loosely based on his life as a lifeguard and swim instructor at a local pool. Any resemblance of characters in this work to persons, drawn or imagined, is purely coincidental.
