Now that I am more confident, I have no problem with teaching swim lessons and sometimes due to my confidence, I have this habit of giving lessons during slow-trafficked rec swim times while guarding. If you happen to be in the pool on a slow day, you may find me giving a mini-swim lesson to a patron who shows a certain degree of proficiency and a love of swimming. I just can’t resist. I see little things that will improve a stroke: a slight change in head position, not over-reaching with the arms or minimizing bent knees when kicking. Yep, I used to be timid; now I’m a maniac!
This cartoon is pretty self-explanatory and it’s really a cartoon about communication skills more than anything. As a gullible, green lifeguard, I was basically talked into teaching swim lessons this way. I didn’t stammer like this, but like Arnold, I was tense. I knew that my supervisors would eventually get me in the water to teach and for some reason I was resistant.

AuthorIan Johnson was born with a crazy cartoon character perspective on the real world. “Suits and Guarders” is loosely based on his life as a lifeguard and swim instructor at a local pool. Any resemblance of characters in this work to persons, drawn or imagined, is purely coincidental. Archives
