We all need lessons in communication! I love the fact that Kurt builds a destroyer while Jonathan builds a sailboat.
Side note: I put the numbers 58 on the destroyer and later found that there is a U.S Navy DDG class still in service called the U.S.S. Laboon. Pretty cool, huh?

In Celebration of the Olympics..........Presenting the Lifeguard Games!

With the Olympics going on, who could resist some lifeguard shenanigans amid the suspense? The “Lifeguard Games” are actually a real event. I did not come up with the idea. It was created by local supervisors I work for. Unfortunately the event has been canceled in recent years. Apparently some lifeguards don’t like competition.

On occasion, our supervisors did ask for suggestions. However, if you go with a teenage guy’s brilliant idea, someone is likely to the get hurt!

This cartoon is linked to actual history: In WWII a group of POW’s escaped from a concentration camp in order to create a diversion. Later in 1963 a movie was dedicated to their valor titled,”The Great Escape.”
Side Note: The line, “I’m watching him. I’m a lifeguard.” is an actual quote from the movie. Surprisingly, there is a great deal of humor in this film. Be sure to subscribe at gocomics.com/suits-and-guarders to get all the "Lifeguard Games" comics in your inbox.

A Li’l Abner Summer-ee

Living a musical comedy every day!
This summer, I participated in the musical comedy “Li’l Abner” which I mentioned in a previous blog. Even though I’m relieved that it ended last weekend, I miss the rehearsals, the wonderful camaraderie of the show with friends and the late nights. Theatre takes a lot of hard work!

My blogs have not been as consistent these last few weeks due to being part of the musical production. On the one hand, it’s great to change things up a bit every once in a while. However, between evening rehearsals and working the mornings and sometimes through the afternoons, I’m glad to be back on my usual schedule of morning work, afternoon cartooning and regular sleep!

So here’s to getting back on schedule. I hope you are finding joy, like me, in the consistency of life.

Ian Johnson was born with a crazy cartoon character perspective on the real world. “Suits and Guarders” is loosely based on his life as a lifeguard and swim instructor at a local pool. Any resemblance of characters in this work to persons, drawn or imagined, is purely coincidental.
