Anime? or Enema?

Notice Thomas is struggling to keep it together. If he laughs out loud, Arnold won't fall for it.
To be honest, I’m not entirely sure how I came up with this one. It must have been the Kurt inside of me. I learned the word enema from the 1989 Batman film when the Joker is complaining about Batman stealing his spotlight. Hmm….I wonder if I can get paid big bucks to complain and use my vocabulary on screen?

The word anime is one that makes me cringe. (Yes, the word enema makes me cringe too.) Anime was a word used in the early stages of my youth almost with the same sentiment as, “Come to the dark side,” or, “It would be better if you did this.” The fact is, I have never been fascinated or interested in learning styles of drawing like anime or manga which are two completely different forms of creation….I think. Then again, I could be wrong, but I really don’t care. Just know that no one’s going to read this blog and suddenly become an anime expert because I have my own style.

Exaggeration is a tool I enjoy using, but still, I always pondered why kids and sometimes young adults would watch me draw and ask, “Do you draw anime?” It almost felt like an insult, and I was tempted to say, “What?! And draw like everyone else?!” Perhaps I drew this one to secretly get back at all those people who thought I needed to be like everyone else. Now that I have drawn this, when I read webcomics and see all the anime and manga infestation, I feel like the joker, “This website needs an enema!”

Just FYI: I have now posted new comics, including this one on Tapastic. Remember, you can always go there and read all of Suits and Guarders from start to present (as I am continuing to create.)  Follow me there if you like.

A Storm, a Tire and a Faulty Warning Bell

PictureOn my way home.
In Real Life...I went on vacation with my family two weeks ago and since I’m in school, I needed to leave early.  It was well worth the drive down, but it sure didn’t feel that way coming back. Taking a six hour road trip by yourself can be a little scary at first, but If you can avoid the urge to panic after taking a few wrong turns, it’s quite a pleasant drive when you have the AC running and the radio blasting out classic rock tunes.

The car I drove there and back is a 1985 Nissan Stanza, which for an old car didn’t have any trouble except for having a tire that slowly leaked 15 psi every 80 to 90 miles. Oh yes, and a faulty warning bell that will occasionally chime even though all systems were working fine. The best part however, was the last leg of the journey in which a massive storm hit around 9pm. The torrential downpour meant that nearly all the vehicles had their amber lights flashing, and slowed down from 70 mph to 35 mph. Because the visibility was very limited, I pulled off and parked in an empty lot to wait for the rain to settle.

You can easily imagine how uneasy I get now that I’m taking a safety and emissions training course. Then again, it might be impossible to tell, given what my ride looks like.

A Shift in Priorities....or what a clever lad am I?

After taking three gap years to pursue my dream to be a cartoonist, I have built enough time, material, and knowledge to take the route towards education. Along with a couple of auto mechanic courses, architectural technology seemed the best possible solution towards being able to work with my hands and still get my pencil and paper fix. Before school, I was on average, working 25 to 30 hours per week, giving me plenty of time to cartoon and spend time with family. Now that studying is attached to my priorities, the ability to turn out comics won’t be as fast as before but the dedication to “Suits and Guarders” is still strong.

Even though I may feel like nothing is getting accomplished or that my progress with the cartoon is slow, it won’t be a total loss. In the end, I will be able to tell you  what material your house is made of, whether it meets fire or structural safety codes AND if your car will pass inspection the next time it’s due….Can you imagine a cartoonist telling people how to follow rules? Did you ever think a cartoonist could be this clever?!

    Author

Ian Johnson was born with a crazy cartoon character perspective on the real world. “Suits and Guarders” is loosely based on his life as a lifeguard and swim instructor at a local pool. Any resemblance of characters in this work to persons, drawn or imagined, is purely coincidental.
