He Had it Coming!

Don't feel too sorry for Thomas. He had it coming!

A lifeguard friend Kendy, dropped a hint about making a cartoon featuring the ladies in the arthritis water aerobics class that she taught. All of these ladies are sweet and kind in their own way. However, for humorous purposes, I needed to boost the feistiness. This never happened, at least not that I’m aware of.

To be truthful, when I started working as a lifeguard, all of the patrons took a liking to me. The morning lap swimmers were quite social, especially if you conversed with them and they had a lane to swim in. The same is true for anyone in water aerobics or in this case, the arthritis class. So don’t feel too sorry for Thomas, he had it coming!

All or Nothing

Currently the high school swim team schedule creates a work environment where lifeguards are either struggling with boredom (no one at the pool) or swamped with swim teams in the water (lots of swimmers at the pool). These two strips are on Go-comics this week and represent the “feast or famine,” “all or nothing” of life at an indoor pool this time of year.

When a swim team is massive in numbers and vastly diverse in speed, coaches come up with lots of exercises that work for all the team members. This is one of them. It’s probably not the favorite for the coach who has to stand there and get soaked or the high school swimmer who has to kick for 5 minutes straight, but it does makes a great comic strip. There is lots of goofing off with this exercise and lots of water that purposely goes on the pool deck.

I’m sure Ellen imagined that Thomas and Bernard would get all of those items done on her “To Do” list but who wants to do projects when you can race chairs down the hallway with a co-worker?

Anyway, no one was hurt while making these comics!

Rivalry and Connivery

"Suits and Guarders" delivers more rivalry between Kurt and Liz.
It appears that Kurt and Liz are finally settled as co-workers, but they still act as oil and water in close proximity. This usually happens to people who want the last word; however, Kurt’s taking it rather well. I haven’t made very many strips with both these characters in them but maybe when the male co-workers stop distracting him and Ellen schedules them on the same shift, there will be more room for rivalry and connivery.

Meanwhile on Go Comics, the lifeguards of “Suits and Guarders” are dealing with high school swim teams which mean there are lots of teens on deck and in the locker rooms. From now until February, there will be an occasional gag involving this highly emotional and busy season of the year. I don’t think I will ever run out of gags involving high school swimmers so just sit back and enjoy.

Ian Johnson was born with a crazy cartoon character perspective on the real world. “Suits and Guarders” is loosely based on his life as a lifeguard and swim instructor at a local pool. Any resemblance of characters in this work to persons, drawn or imagined, is purely coincidental.
